Åsa Pettersson is our 'Introduction to Music' teacher for young beginners, age 4-7. She mixes rhythm practice on percussive instruments with basic note reading for recorder and glockenspiel, and, for the more advanced, the ukulele is introduced. Moving and dancing while learning about different musical genres and instruments is a small but popular part of her lessons.
Åsa grew up in a musical family in Sweden. She took keyboard and violin lessons as a child, but playing the piano at her grandparent's was where her love for music begun.
At 17, she came to learn English and study for one year at Paraparaumu College, where 'Performance Music' became her main focus. She has since made Aotearoa her home.
Åsa has worked most of her life in primary schools and kindergartens and has been performing as vocalist and percussionist with the band 'Fig Jam' for over two decades now.
