Nicole Thomson

Kia ora! I’m Nicole, your flute teacher for KMC. I started my music journey here at KMC learning recorder from fellow tutor Yemma in 2006. From there I worked my way up towards the flute which I began learning 11 years ago.

I celebrated many successes while studying music with Dr Gioia Brunoro at Kapiti College. I performed in several national chamber music competitions winning individual awards for woodwind performance and group awards for overall performance, Highly Commended awards and a bronze award (2014-2018). In 2016 I received the Music Futures scholarship to study flute performance which is when I began learning from Bridget Douglas - head flautist of the NZSO.  From Bridget I gained a lot of knowledge and confidence, enough to begin teaching others successfully with private lessons (2016- 2022).

By day I am a barista in Wellington CBD. In my free time I love spending time with friends, pets and family or doing anything music related. Listening to, writing, playing, and teaching it.

My teaching style definitely revolves around what the students are interested in, whether it be the style of music or specific skills they would like to improve on. I believe if the student is learning what they are interested in, they are much more likely to succeed and continue to learn for longer periods of time (and most importantly- have fun while doing it!)

I’m now looking forward to this next stage of my music journey back where it all began!
